Episode #22: Typhlosion vs. Rapidash!

The gang made it to the Seafoam Islands where a temporary Gym was stationed for those looking for the Cinnabar Island Gym. Flow, much like Dash back in the day, had to answer some riddles before progressing onward. He managed to get three out of the five right, which left Blaine to send out his Magcargo to battle with.

“I don't know how you got it right,” Blaine said, “but I won't lose to you now!”

“We'll see about that!” Flow said.

Flow knew who to choose first. After all, he was really good against the rock types. He took out his Poké Ball, prayed for the best and got to work.

“Go, Hitmontop!” Flow said.

Flow sent out his Hitmontop to battle. Flow hoped that his Fighting Type moves would do well against Magcargo.

“You think a Fighting Type can take me down?” Blaine asked. “We'll see about that!”

“Begin!” Celio said, raising his flags in the air.

“Magcargo, use Flamethrower!”

“Hitmontop, use Triple Kick!” Flow ordered.

Hitmontop shot himself while Magcargo fired a Flamethrower. The fires weren't going to stop Hitmontop as he struck Magcargo with a hard strike.

“Use Lava Plume!” Blaine ordered.

Magcargo got it together and fired a Lava Plume attack, striking Hitmontop as he fell to the ground. He quickly got up and prepared to strike again.

“Use Rolling Kick!” Flow ordered.

Hitmontop spun around and headed towards Magcargo, while Blaine refused to get another hit in.

“Protect!” Blaine ordered.

Magcargo used a dome-like shield to protect himself from Hitmontop's attack.

“Earth Power!” Blaine ordered.

Magcargo shook the earth as he damaged Hitmontop with a powerful attack. Hitmontop fell to the ground, feeling weak.

“Come on, get up!” Flow said.

Hitmontop immediately got up and prepared to fight again.

“Spin around him!” Flow ordered.

Hitmontop jumped onto the spike on his head and spun around Magcargo, causing him to look around as Hitmontop gained speed. Blaine wondered what he was trying to do.

“Protect!” Blaine ordered.

“Rolling Kick, hurry!” Flow ordered.

Hitmontop used his momentum to shoot towards Magcargo and struck him before he could get his shield up. Magcargo just fell to his side, unable to battle.

“Magcargo is unable to battle!” Celio said, raising his green flag to Flow. “Hitmontop is the winner!”

“Nice work!” Flow said.

“Hitmontop!” he replied.

Blaine called his Magcargo back and smiled. He took out his next Poké Ball and prepared to take on Flow's Hitmontop.

“Go, Magmar!” Blaine said.

Blaine sent out his Magmar to battle. It appeared to be a large bipedal, lizard-like Pokémon with a flame pattern on his body and a duck-like beak. He also had spikes on his back and ruffles on his arms. He also had black bands around his neck and legs. Flow opened his Pokédex to check it out.

“MAGMAR: THE SPITFIRE POKÉMON; THE EVOLVED FORM OF MAGBY. IT DISLIKES COLD PLACES, SO IT BLOWS SCORCHING FLAMES TO MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT SUITABLE FOR ITSELF.”

“Begin!” Celio said.

“Magmar, use Fire Blast!” Blaine ordered.

Magmar fired a blast in the form of a simple Japanese letter that struck Hitmontop hard and sent him flying back. He fell to the ground, unable to battle.

“Hitmontop is unable to battle!” Celio said, raising his red flag to Blaine. “Magmar is the winner!”

Flow called back his Hitmontop as he tried to figure out what to do now. He wondered who to use now, not to mention Lanturn was out of the picture since he was useless on land. He decided on a Pokémon and took out his next Pokémon.

“Go, Gliscor!” Flow said.

Flow sent out his Gliscor. Being a Ground Type, he might have an advantage over Magmar.

He may not know too many Ground Type moves,” Flow thought, “but if I can land a Guillotine on him, I can win this!

“Begin!” Celio said.

“Magmar, use Lava Plume!” Blaine ordered.

“Fly to the left!” Flow ordered.

Magmar fired his Lava Plume as Gliscor flew away and shot to the left. He used the air to glide, while Magmar watched.

“X-Scissor!” Flow ordered.

“Block it!” Blaine ordered.

Gliscor shot towards Magmar, who blocked both of his arms with his hands. Flow and Gliscor were both surprised by how skilled Magmar was.

“Whoa!” Tobias said. “He blocked them so easily!”

“I have a feeling that this won't be too simple for Flow!” Silver said.

Magmar shot him back, leaving Blaine to give his orders.

“Use Fire Punch!” Blaine ordered.

“Use Poison Sting!” Flow ordered.

Magmar charged forward as Gliscor fired numerous poison-tipped needles at him. The needles hit, but they didn't do too much. Magmar struck Gliscor with a Fire Punch attack, knocking him against the wall. He lifted himself up, but freaked out when he saw Magmar charging towards him.

“Flare Blitz!” Blaine ordered.

Magmar began to engulf himself in a fiery aura that sparked electricity as well. Gliscor didn't know what to do.

“X-Scissor!” Flow ordered.

Gliscor blocked with an X-Scissor attack, striking him back. Magmar shot back, but recovered easily.

“Flare Blitz once more!” Blaine ordered.

“Guillotine!” Flow ordered.

Gliscor's pincer began to grow as he saw Magmar charging towards him. It became big enough to surround Magmar with.

“Get out of there!” Blaine ordered.

Magmar was too late. He stopped the attack and saw Gliscor smiling. He clamped it shut as he dealt a lot of damage to Magmar, leaving him to slump in defeat. Magmar was immediately unable to battle.

“Magmar is unable to battle!” Celio said, raising his green flag to Flow. “Gliscor is the winner!”

“Excellent work, Gliscor!” Flow said.

“Gli, gli!” he said.

“He's pretty good at this,” Silver said. “I can see how he beat me at the Trainer Tower.”

“He beat you easily, right?” Tobias asked.

“Pichu?” Kevin asked as well.

“Indeed,” Silver replied. “I hope he manages to win this battle.”

Blaine called back his Magmar as he prepared to send his main Pokémon out. Blaine smiled as he prepared to get down to business.

“Go, Rapidash!” Blaine said.

Blaine sent his final Pokémon; a unicorn-like Pokémon with white skin and flames instead of hair. He was as elegant as horse Pokémon came.

“A Rapidash,” Flow said.

“Rapidash is quite the marvel!” Blaine said. “He's the best one I've got!”

“Well, so are mine!” Flow said. “Ready, Gliscor?”

“Gliscor!” Gliscor said.

Tobias looked at Spiky and Kevin and noticed that they're interested in their battle. Spiky talked to Kevin about the battle, leaving Tobias to be happy that they were getting along so well.

“Begin!” Celio said.

“Rapidash, use Agility!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash picked up speed to made a wide circle around Gliscor. He was moving so fast that Gliscor could not keep up with him. Flow and the others were amazed at his lightning fast speed.

“He's...too fast!” Flow said to himself.

“Flare Blitz!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash made a sharp turn to strike Gliscor hard, knocking him against the wall with Rapidash's attack combined with his speed.

“Gliscor!” Flow shouted in shock.

Gliscor fell to the ground, unable to battle.

“Gliscor is unable to battle!” Celio said, raising his red flag to Blaine. “Rapidash is the winner!”

“He's good,” Flow said. “That Rapidash is strong.”

“I've never seen a Rapidash that fast before!” Tobias said.

“Yeah,” Silver replied. “I wonder if Flow knows what he's doing?”

Flow called his Gliscor back as he felt like he could do this. He just hoped that Typhlosion would be able to withstand his fire attacks. After all, his next, and final Pokémon, was a Fire Type.

“Go, Typhlosion!” Flow said.

Flow sent his Typhlosion out to battle. He roared proudly as he planted himself down on all fours. He smiled as he prepared to face off against Rapidash, who would prove to be a formidable opponent.

“Begin!” Celio said for the last time.

“Rapidash, use Flare Blitz!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash shot towards Typhlosion and blocked the attack, taking the hit well. He smiled as he regained his balance.

“Flame Wheel!” Flow ordered.

Typhlosion shot towards Rapidash with a powerful Flame Wheel, striking him hard. Rapidash landed safely as he prepared to fight back.

“Flamethrower!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash fired a Flamethrower attack, which didn't seem to affect Typhlosion that much. In fact, he was enjoying it!

I still have to be careful,” Flow thought. “Even though he's a Fire Type, he still takes damage. Not that it matters at all.

“Megahorn!” Blaine ordered.

But that does!” Flow thought. “Dodge and use Swift!”

Rapidash's horn began to glow as he charged towards Typhlosion. He dodged the attack and struck with numerous yellow stars that hit Rapidash greatly.

“SmokeScreen!” Flow ordered.

Typhlosion began to spread a black smoke around the field, hiding himself within. Blaine looked around as he wondered where he was now.

I have to make sure he doesn't get hit,” Flow thought. “Rapidash is probably immune to fire attacks as well.

“Flamethrower!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash sprayed his Flamethrower, clearing the smoke away. He cleared the smoke, but Typhlosion didn't appear to be there at all. Blaine noticed that Typhlosion was ducked down, behind Rapidash.

“Double-Edge!” Flow ordered.

Typhlosion jumped back and struck behind Rapidash, knocking him down. He immediately got back up to prepare for another strike.

“Megahorn!” Blaine ordered.

Rapidash struck Typhlosion with a strong Megahorn attack. Typhlosion fell to the ground in response, trying to get up.

“Don't give in!” Flow said.

Typhlosion stood up, not willing to give in. Flow needed one powerful attack to beat him.

“Double Edge!” Flow ordered.

“Megahorn!” Blaine ordered.

Both Pokémon charged forward, but Rapidash faltered a little. Typhlosion struck Rapidash with a powerful attack and sent him back. Rapidash fell to the ground, unable to battle. Blaine was amazed at how strong Typhlosion was.

“Rapidash is unable to battle!” Celio said. “Typhlosion is the winner! The victory goes to Flow of New Bark Town!”

Flow cheered in victory as he went over to hug Typhlosion, who was feeling very happy. Blaine couldn't believe that a Pokémon of his own specialty type beat him. He felt a bit upset, but proud.

“Well done,” Blaine said. “Kiddo.”

He went over to Flow and Typhlosion, who both saw him coming as they knew what they were going to expect.

“I can tell that you both deserve this,” Blaine said, showing them his badge. The badge itself was a flame-like badge with a pink diamond in the middle. “Red as the burning heat. Pink as the deepest part of the fire, the hottest point. This, my friend, is the Volcano Badge. It is yours to keep.”

Flow looked at it proudly. The rest of them went over to him, proud as well. All Flow needed now was the Earth Badge from the Viridian Gym, the one man who he had yet to beat in the league. He only hoped that he didn't lose this battle at all. After all, it was against Keiji Rensan, the best trainer in Kanto next to his rival, Dash Ryuujin.
